The BPA's top squaw catchers earned some serious coin!
At the Portland show last week, we stopped in and checked out the Bonneville Power Administration’s Northern Pikeminnow Sport Reward Program booth and we were blown away by what the top squaw anglers were making. The number one cat cleared $80K in 2010!
In an effort to lean out the population of predatory pikeminnow (squawfish) in the Columbia River to help juvenile salmon and steelhead survive, BPA has a bounty program in which hook and line anglers can earn $4 to $8 each for every squawfish they catch over 9 inches in length. Start your new career

Times are tough, so maybe you should consider a career change and become a professional squawfish angler! With Bonneville Power Administration’s 2011 Northern Pikeminnow Sport Reward Program, you can earn $4 to $8 each for every squawfish you catch over 9 inches in length on the Columbia River (The top anglers last season made…get this…close to $50,000!).
It’s all part of an effort to make the river safer for out-migrating juvenile salmon and steelhead. For details, click HERE

You can never catch a squawfish when you want to.
We were two hours into our trip and Mac and I didn’t have one lousy squawfish to our name. We couldn’t buy one, not even a nibble. Oh sure, we started getting bites about 30 seconds after we’d dropped the anchor and put our lines out, but they were all stripers.
“Crap, another striper,” Mac says as he hauls our 20th bass over the side. “When you’re fishing salmon out here, you can’t keep the squawfish off your baits. But now, I couldn’t catch one to save my own soul.”
And so it goes until darkness sets in. We’ve caught more 8- to 14-inch micro striped bass than we can count but our squaw total still sits at zero – and we’re bummed. [click to continue…]

Are squawfish tax exempt?
If you are, in these tough economic times, perhaps looking for a better paying career, maybe you should consider becoming a professional Squawfish Angler in the Columbia River basin.
To try to help better the survival of out-migrating salmon and steelhead smolt, the Bonneville Power Administration will pay you $4-$8 for each squawfish (northern pikeminnow) over 9 inches you can pull out of the river. As you can see, the more proficient squaw wranglers made more than just chump change last year. For details, click HERE
Travis Bryan has done it again, folks! Who’s Travis Bryan, you ask? Well only the Inter-Galactic Squawfish Record holder, that’s who…and he’s been busy of late.
Here he is with his latest trophy, a Feather River dandy that he’s entered into our Smoker of the Year Contest. A nice fish to be sure, but a mere (pike) minnow compared to the record fish that propelled him to squaw stardom several seasons ago. [click to continue…]
