There’s a new Kwikfish going into my starting lineup Monday morning…

You can't beat a fresh sardine!
Our latest Ask JD question comes from Rob Y. who’s looking to make some sense out of scents when it comes to fall salmon fishing with plugs. Rob writes:
JD, I have a quick question about fishing with Kwikfish for salmon. I heard or read somewhere that instead of doing a sardine wrap you can put some self-stick Velcro on the bottom of the plug and then smother it in gel sent. How well does that work? And, do you think a sardine wrap really works since the fish are on the move anyway? By the way, loved your steelhead book!
Thanks, Rob Hey Rob! There have been several methods devised over the years to avoid having to wrap plugs with sardine or herring fillets…some guys have done the Velcro thing, while others have glued sponges or stuck scent pads to the bottoms of their plugs and then doused everything in some sort of scent. Then there was Pro Cure’s Bait Butter, which was a scent concoction with a peanut butter consistency that you could just lather your lure in. All of the above worked, but…

No need for Alaska when Northern California has kings like this!
We’re not all palm trees, Baywatch and Hollywood down in here in California…we’ve also got some monster king salmon like this 51-pound beast caught on the Smith River Monday, Oct. 25 by Ken Carter on a sardine-wrapped K16 Kwikfish. Carter and Gil Sissons had an epic day while fishing with guide
John Klar (they ended up 11 for 12 on sea lice chromers) and fishing looks like it should be good for quite a while.

The line went limp and that was that. The General was gone. I’m sad to report that I recently lost one of my super A-List All Star Kwikfish, one known as “The General,” who’d been with me from back in the Alaskan guiding days. The General was a toothy K15 Kwikfish in the Dragonfly pattern…and one of those rare few that you put in the water and just know it’s going to get bit. Well, get bit he did and then {Presto} he was lost. We must have had a nick in the line somewhere but it popped with very little pressure. Farewell General and thanks for the memories!
I named the plug after an ol WWII veteran that I fished in Alaska, Major General Erbon Wise who had stormed the beach in Normandy on D-Day. Check out his story HERE.

He’s normally guiding deer hunts on a private ranch in the Bay Area (yes, you heard that right), but Josh Peixoto of JP Guide Service also likes to put a bend in the ol’ rod from time to time. On Saturday, he caught this nice king salmon on a backtrolled Kwikfish while fishing with me on the Feather River.
As if just catching a king in California this year wasn’t reward enough, Josh is also entered into our August Hawg of the Month Contest in which he’ll battle it out with other anglers for a shot at a free fishing trip. Learn more about the contest HERE.

We didn't catch a lot of monsters on the 'Nush, but this was clearly a beast...that we released.
During the last week of June and into the start of July, it’s hard for my thoughts not to wander up to the incomparable Nushagak River in remote Southwest Alaska. Before I was a papa, I spent 7 seasons guiding on the word’s greatest king salmon stream…which always seemed to peak about this time of year.
The ‘Nush is simply one of those places you must fish before you turn into fertilizer…there’s just no other place like it. You won’t find better king fishing anywhere. Looking back over all those seasons, I can clearly recall my worst-ever day of fishing, which still resulted in 18 kings to the boat! And the best of days were well into the triple digits, though after a dozen or so you kinda lose count. I’d say the average day during the meat of the season saw each of our boats hooking 20-40 per trip.
Most of my photos from those days are all on slide film, but I recently found a few digitals. So, here we go a little walk down memory lane…

If you're a Kwikfish, you don't wanna end up here!
The old cardboard box in the corner of my garage…if you’re a salmon or steelhead plug and you end up there, you can rest assured that your career is over.
It’s amazing how you can buy 20 identical plugs and typically only 1 or 2 of them will ever prove to be certified All Stars. Sure, several will catch fish from time to time, but not frequently enough to be on the A Team. A few others will catch fish with some tweakage (after you do things like replace the line attachment screw, drill out the rattles and mess with hook configurations). Others still will be totally worthless…

Does it live up to the hype??
Yakima Bait Co’s MagLip has been selling like hotcakes in the Pacific Northwest lately, but is that just a case of everybody rushing out to buy the newest thing on the market or does this plug actually catch fish?
Recently, we spent a couple weeks thoroughly testing the MagLip to find out. Read on for the full review.
