Ryan Yi's first-ever fish wins the 2010 Hawg Bowl!
In thrilling fashion, 9-year-old
Ryan Yi barely (in overtime) edged out
Dianne Mitchell to become our 2010 Hawg Bowl Champion! The vote was tight, with the lead changing several times a day through much of the competition. Congrats to both!
The Hawg Bowl was intended to just be fun but the ugly side of humanity also reared its head in this one…

What an epic battle this has been! Snowed in last night with no internet, I hiked, at the stroke of 12 midnight, through the 6-foot drifts to the top of a hill (2 degrees outside!!) to get cell service to check the final Hawg Bowl standing on my phone. At at precisely 12 AM, it was a dead heat…which wasn’t a huge surprise considering it’s been neck and neck all week. So, the only logical thing to do is go into overtime. So, the polls are back open now and will close at midnight, Jan. 5. Good luck!!

Well, it finally comes down to this…the Hawg Bowl kicks off tomorrow! Before the big game, let’s take a moment to say thanks to everybody who participated in the Hawg of the Month competition all year and congrats to all of you who made the playoffs!
The fact that two very unlikely contenders — a 9-year-old’s 6-pound bass and a nice, 30-pound king (not even the largest of the competition) have reached the finals shows that you, the voters, are getting the bigger picture here…what the true essence of the sport is all about…and I think that’s really cool!
Before you vote tomorrow, let’s take a closer look at the contenders. Ryan Yi’s largemouth was not only the first bass of the 9-year-old’s career…but the first-ever fish for him! He reached the finals by winning the October Hawg of the Month vote. Dianne Mitchell’s 30-pound Chinook came from the Smith River while she fished with dad Jim. The king was a late entry and after a narrow victory in the Wild Card round, she took the Western Conference finals by a large margin. Guess dudes like the cute girl with a fish angle!

The stage is now set for the 2010 Hawg Bowl! Dianne Mitchell jumped out to an early lead with her 30-pound Smith River Chinook in the Western Conference Finals and never relinquished hold of the top slot. Now, two unlikely contenders — Dianne and 9-year-old Ryan Yi — will collide in the Hawg Bowl, which kicks off Christmas Day.

In an amazing upset, the smallest angler with the smallest fish just trounced the competition in the Hawg Bowl’s Eastern Conference Championship and is headed to the Big Dance. Nine-year-old Ryan Yi’s first ever fish has taken him on a wild ride, from a narrow victory in the October Hawg of the Month Contest to his impressive shellacking of the competition here in the Eastern Conference title game.
Through much of the week, the lead changed hands frequently and Mike B’s big ass sea bass looked to be the front-runner. Then, thanks to a good turnout of fans, Chris’ near-death steelie lept into the lead. That’s were things got interesting! Later in the day on Thursday, just hours after Chris took the top spot, Yi’s fish took a major jump forward…and buried everybody for good.
In the end, Yi, received 45.7% of the 602 votes, followed by Chris’ Steelie (20.9%) and Junior’s Frozen Steelhead was a distant third with 12.1% of the vote. For his efforts, the kid will face off on Christmas Day in the Hawg Bowl against the winner of the upcoming Western Conference Finals.

The kiddies dominated the Wild Card round and now, we have our final two Hawg Bowl Playoffs slots filled. Dianne Mitchell (49% of the vote) and Austin Fitzhugh (28.8%) bashed the competition and will get a chance to compete for all the marbles later this month.

Must have been the Wild Turkey...
In what started out as a pretty tight race, Mike Placencia and his “Hangover King” from the Smith River eventually pulled away from the pack (including the “Kayak King” which was a larger fish from the same drainage) to win the November Hawg of the Month vote by a pretty good margin. In doing so, he punched the final ticket to the Hawg Bowl Playoffs coming later this month.

It’s getting to be that time of year again…time when all the 2010 Hawg of the Month winners will (try to imagine the guy from NFL Films’ voice here) do battle head-to-head in an epic, single elimination grudge match for all the glory. The action will reach its bloody crescendo at the Holy Grail of fishing supremacy, the Hawg Bowl, from which only one can emerge alive. Who will proudly climb to the top of fishing’s most hallowed mountain and hoist above his head the spoils of victory? Stay tuned to find out!
Yea, well…something like that anyway. The playoffs do kick off this week and we’ll get it started with a play-in round. Get ready to vote!
