Fish and fisherman...in their respective elements

Okay, so maybe the rivalry doesn’t run as deep as the Bad Boy Records vs. Death Row Records thing, but you’ve got a little West vs. East thing happening in Lake Ontario, where Pacific Salmon and Atlantic Salmon occur in the same areas.
Our man Joel Shangle, the main monkey behind the zoo that isNorthwest Wild Country, which is like the largest outdoor radio show in the galaxy or something, headed with the Pautzke’s gang to Hamlin, NY to fish Lake Ontario yesterday. Not only did they find ding-dong school style fishing for big browns and jumbo steelhead, but they also got into some nice-sized Chinook…and a lonely Atlantic salmon.
While the Atlantic was deemed very rare by the crew, they are caught from time to time on Ontario, making it one of the few places on planet earth where you can catch a little East Coast on the same day as you get into some West Coast.
The Chinook and steelhead are obviously transplants from the Pacific Northwest that naturally produce in Great Lakes tribs, while the Atlantics are, in a funny little twist, actually planted by Canada.

The weather was obviously very nice when Jeff Plecque and wife Lisa hit Lake Shasta in Northern California recently. While trolling a Shasta Tackle Cripplure behind a Sling Blade Dodger at 60 feet, Lisa hooked this nice brown trout. Though Jeff spent 20 minutes trying to revive it, the fish didn’t make it so the couple had a nice trout dinner.
As our latest Hawg of the Month submission, Lisa earns a chance at the monthly prize: Some headgear from Pautzke’s and also has a shot at the Grand Prize, a guided fishing trip for two with Bill “Swanny” Swann of Swanny’s Fishing.

The June Hawg of the Month Contest was a duel to the death between Chris Fenton and Chad Resler and their two big brown trout, but Fenton’s fish from a High Sierra lake eeked out the victory in the end.
Fenton will receive some Pautzke’s head gear for being the monthly winner and will also move onto the Hawg Bowl Playoffs at the end of the year in which he’ll get to compete for a guided fishing trip for two with Swanny’s Fishing.

Fishing conditions at the high country lakes in the Sierra Nevada have been tough lately due to very un-spring like weather. But snow, wind and rain is exactly what big brown chasers like Chris Fenton like for targeting jumbo salmo trutta.
Last week, Chris ventured to the high country to brave the conditions…apparently, it worked out as he caught and released two browns in the 10+ pound range, including this one which is the latest entry into our Hawg of the Month Contest.
At the end of June, you, the readers, will get to vote on the Hawg of the Month. Winners get headgear from Pautzke’s and a shot at the grand prize, a fishing trip for two with guide Bill “Swanny” Swann of Swanny’s Fishing. Our first entry in the June version of the Hawg of the Month Contest sets the bar pretty high. Chad Resler nailed this 13-pound brown trout in a Northern California reservoir on a hand-painted Bomber. Dude was on some kind of hot streak that day, too, since this fish came 20 minutes after he boated a 10-pound, 4-ounce brown! Must have been the good luck Giants shirt!

Northern California’s New Melones Reservoir is known mostly for its chunky kokanee and solid rainbows, so imagine Kevin Fisk’s surprise when this 11-pound, 7-ounce chrome brown smacked his Kastmaster up the river arm! The big fish measured 28 and 3/4 inches and took 25 minutes to land on 6-pound line.
For his efforts, Kevin’s entered into our Hawg of the Month Contest in which he has a shot to win some Pautzke’s head gear and maybe even a guided trip with Bill Swann of Swanny’s Fishing. If you have a big fish to enter, send us an email and we’ll tell you where to send the pics.
