In just two weeks, fewer than a thousand voters in the remote Lake and Peninsula Borough of Alaska could decide the fate of the gigantic Pebble mine prospect, which if approved, could be the most devastating development project in Alaska history.
Read more at the Anchorage Daily News and keep your fingers crossed that the world’s richest salmon drainage doesn’t get snuffed out by the mighty dollar…made by folks from a different country, by the way!

If it ever goes into full operation, Pebble Mine, located 200 miles southwest of Anchorage, would likely be the worst environmental disaster to ever befall the state. Situated in the headwaters of Bristol Bay, you can pretty much kiss goodbye some of the world’s most prolific salmon and trout streams if Pebble gets going. And here’s a shocker…there may have been some closed door dealings between the State of Alaska and Pebble Limited Partnership when exploration permits for the mine were issued. Wow, what a surprise…Big Cash trumps all!

Get ready for Alaska’s transformation from pristine to polluted. Last week, voters, with the help of GOP Veep candidate Sarah Palin, shot down the The Clean Water Initiative (Ballot Measure 4), which was designed to protect Alaska salmon, salmon habitat, and drinking water from any new large-scale metal mines by limiting the discharge or release of certain toxic pollutants.
