big fred contaoi

Every once in a while you need to get outta the office and take a “mental health” day…or three days, as was the case last week when Big Fred Contaoi and I headed north to Eel River country, Monday-Weds for some “chrome therapy.”

Name that Fish: Eye to Eye Edition

by JD on January 13, 2012

I only have eyes for...you!

It’s been a while since our last round of the Name that Fish Game…luckily Big Fred Contaoi got out there with the trusty iPhone again and snapped this shot. So, what is it??

Be Free!!!

by JD on December 28, 2011

Our man Big Fred Contaoi calls this his “luckiest shot ever”…and it is, indeed a sweet one. The action took place in mid December on Texas’ Lake Falcon where this good sized largemouth decided to return a 12-inch plastic worm and 3/4-ounce bullet weight to its rightful owner. Luckily, Big Fred was there at the ready with his trusty new iPhone 4S at the instant the bucketmouth earned its freedom.

What a 5-gallon bucket with fins looks like...

The weather’s been a bit crazy back at Lake Falcon, on the Texas-Mexico border, but that hasn’t stopped our pal and intergalactic basin’ superstar Big Fred Contaoi from catching a mess o’ bass…including this 14-pouund toad that’s just shy of the lake record!

Contaoi hooked the thing in the trees on an 11-inch plastic worm and said it fought really well…it ripped line and even tried to get its obese body airborne. To see his record setting bass from Percy Priest Lake in Nashville, TN, click HERE

Underwater Fun!

by JD on July 26, 2011

Fish and fisherman...in their respective elements

Big Fred and I headed to a local pond yesterday for a little ultralight trout fishing…and while the catching was a blast…you know me…I was having even more fun playing with the cameras. Underwater stuff can be a bit of a crapshoot, but here are a few shots that are kinda fun… [click to continue…]

Another healthy Clear Lake largemouth for the Big Man

So the calendar says spring, but here in California at least, it’s like the dead of winter…cold, rainy and windy. It’s wacky weather like this — sunny and 70 degrees one day, then pouring the next — that can make bass fishing tough. Still, our pal Big Fred Contaoi has been sending us some pix of big bass from Clear Lake lately, so he’s obviously figured something out. In fact, he finished 4th in a big tourney there last week…and the weather was super funky then, too.

But, this is all a long preamble to say that the spawn’s not far off…so it’s time to target pre-spawn bass. Learn how HERE

The Last Leap

by JD on March 14, 2011

I took this photo a couple weeks back and just thought it was kinda interesting. As Big Fred was attempting to land this colored-up buck, I swooped in for a ground-level shot and, other than the water that got splashed on the lens, I like the different perspective it presents…more fun than the classic grip-n-grin anyway!

Okay, so in the interest of full disclosure here, the headline is a bit melodramatic: Since the fish was released seconds later, it probably wasn’t his final jump, but it just kinda sounded cool…
