Prospecting for Salmo Salar

Our two favorite English anglers and field scouts from “Across the Pond”, Richard and Guy didn’t make their annual salmon and steelhead pilgrimage to Northern California’s Trinity River this fall, opting instead to stick a little closer to home and fish for salmon in Scotland.

Here’s a quick photo essay of their mission compliments of Richard… [click to continue…]

Ribble River Surprise!

by JD on July 24, 2011

And this, folks, is why you play the game...

Here’s yet another prime example why fishing is so damn awesome: Our good friend from across “The Pond,” Richard Masters, fished the River Ribble near Lancashire in Northwest England last week. Unfortunately, the river was still high and pretty much blown out following a recent flood — and the fishing was lousy.

Masters says he threw hardware in the muddy water all day without success and then, on his way home the next morning, he made a quick stop along the river to get a feel for the new 5-weight trout fly rod he had just purchased…and then a funny thing happened: [click to continue…]

Okay, so maybe the rivalry doesn’t run as deep as the Bad Boy Records vs. Death Row Records thing, but you’ve got a little West vs. East thing happening in Lake Ontario, where Pacific Salmon and Atlantic Salmon occur in the same areas.

Our man Joel Shangle, the main monkey behind the zoo that isNorthwest Wild Country, which is like the largest outdoor radio show in the galaxy or something, headed with the Pautzke’s gang to Hamlin, NY to fish Lake Ontario yesterday. Not only did they find ding-dong school style fishing for big browns and jumbo steelhead, but they also got into some nice-sized Chinook…and a lonely Atlantic salmon.

While the Atlantic was deemed very rare by the crew, they are caught from time to time on Ontario, making it one of the few places on planet earth where you can catch a little East Coast on the same day as you get into some West Coast.

The Chinook and steelhead are obviously transplants from the Pacific Northwest that naturally produce in Great Lakes tribs, while the Atlantics are, in a funny little twist, actually planted by Canada.

This looks fun: Landlocked Atlantic Salmon fishing in Massachusetts’ Quabbin Reservoir. Who’s up for a roadie??

While Atlantic salmon fishing has gone to hell along much of the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S., there is still lots of opportunity for glory on Quebec’s epic Gaspe River. Guide April Vokey of FlyGal Ventures still has a few spots left on her September 11-15, 2011 mission.

If landlocked sockeye got this big, you'd never land one!

On March 14, the International Game Fish Association announced that that the 26-pound, 12-ounce landlocked Atlantic Salmon caught last fall by Tom Aufiero of Lafayette, IN in Michigan’s Torch Lake catch is the new IGFA All-Tackle world record for the species.

Aufiero caught the fish on a small shrimp-patterned fly fished on 6-pound tippet with guide guide, Matt Supinski, owner of the Gray Drake Lodge.

Why salmon should wear helmets

by JD on March 6, 2010

Our pal from the other side of the Pond, Franklin Moquette (our European correspondent), sent in this video of Atlantic salmon absolutely bashing their brains in against a weir on the Varde Aa in West Denmark as they try to leap it.

The frame above is grainy because I screen captured it off the video, but the movie has much better resolution. Read on for the link… [click to continue…]
