Whatever it is...it's damn ugly!'
Okay, so here’s a special edition of
Name that Fish! It comes from our buds over at Adien James Lures and I can honestly say that I have no frigging idea what this beast is.
It was taken on a Senko in Northern California’s Hennessey Lake…anybody have a clue what it is? It’s clearly not a sucker, carp or squawfish, but beyond that, I’m not sure…

Look into the eyes of this predator and see if you can Name That Fish! Big Fred Contaoi snapped on one if his travels far and wide.

So, they don’t grow to 20 pounds (if they did, you’d never land one), they don’t jump and they don’t burn drag, but there’s just something cool about panfish…especially when they get big enough that you mistake them for bass when you set the hook!
This dandy hit a 6-inch RoboWorm last weekend when I was out bass fishing with buddies…he was the only one of the day, but I’d like to go back and target them!
Can you Name that Fish? Hint: in the Southeast, they are called Chinquapins.

Hmmm...wonder where the name "suckerfish" came from??
Okay, so we all know this guy to be a suckerfish…but for this round of
Name that Fish, use the comments section below to give me your best nickname for these guys. You know, like: “Bugle-Mouthed Brown Trout,” or “Big Lipped Golden Trout,” or “Turd with Fins.” You get the idea!

This round of Name that Fish comes to us from the East Coast, where this trout X char hybrid is a popular sport fish. Because it is sterile, this fish puts all its energy into growing instead of reproduction. Apparently, he’s also quite an aggressive bugger.

I only have eyes for...you!
It’s been a while since our last round of the Name that Fish Game…luckily
Big Fred Contaoi got out there with the trusty iPhone again and snapped this shot. So, what is it??

Big Fred got loose (again) with his new iPhone 4S on a recent mission...
Okay all you armchair biologists out there (real ones, too!), see if you can get this round of

Finally...I stumped ya'll!
For the first time in
Name that Fish history, I finally baffled you guys! Normally, you nail ones pretty easily that I think are pretty tough. Of course, I had to resort to trick photography here and get super zoomed-in, but hey a win is a win…I’ll take it! :)
The answer I was looking for was: “WIPER.” We had several close calls, including Eric T’s guess of white bass and Wilson and others had striped bass…but the fish was actually a cross of the two: Striper x White Bass = Wiper, which are popular in many lakes in the southeast. The closest lake to the West Coast that has ‘em is Lahontan Reservoir in Nevada.
Most creative guess: Jeff LaShell’s
“Mermaid. Costa Rican. Haven’t seen one this closeup since Spring Break ’92.”
