Hawg of the Month Contest

Your 2011 Hawg Bowl Champion!!!

by JD on January 11, 2012

The votes are in and, though it was a good battle down to the end, Adam Baker and his chrome slab of Sacramento River Chinook Salmon edged out Laura’s beautiful Clearwater steelhead by a margin of 57% to 43%. As you can see from the chart below, the votes were pretty evenly spread out across the US, but Adam definitely carried Europe and that random area somewhere off the coast of Nigeria!

For his efforts, Adam wins a guided fishing trip for 2 with top-notch Pacific Northwest guide, Bill “Swanny” Swann of Swanny’s Fishing!

Adam’s pristine, 45-pound Sacramento River Chinook blew the competition away in the Hawg Bowl’s Southern Division Playoff. Who will go up against him in the 2011 Hawg Bowl? You decide…

Well, we’re finally made it to the postseason and now your vote decides which one of these fish from the Southern Division will make it to the Hawg Bowl! The winner, of course will go up against the top seed out of the Northern Division, which will be next week. This year’s Hawg Bowl Champ will get a free fishing trip for two with guide Bill Swann of Swanny’s Fishing!

The voters have spoken and Adam Baker’s extremely impressive Sacramento River Chinook has officially been crowned the October 2011 Hawg of the Month! With the win, Adam gets some Pautzke’s headgear and has a shot at the grand prize, a fishing trip for two with guide Bill Swann of Swanny’s Fishing.

And now the stage is set for the Hawg Bowl Playoffs, which will occur all month…starting with the Wild Card play-in round, in which we’ll pit some of the top second place finishers from earlier in the year against one another for a last chance bid to the Big Dance.

Here’s a quick glance at how this month’s voting went down. Apparently, Baker carried the West Coast — not to mention the equatorial offshore vote near Africa!

Yeaah!

The Trinity River in Northern California is known for good numbers of smaller steelies that typically run 6-7 pounds, but it can pump out much bigger ones now and then…like this 31-incher Tom McCoy of Walnut Creek hooked while flyfishing with an egg pattern.

McCoy’s buddy, Brad Harrington guessed it at around 15 pounds. “The fish was easily the biggest steelhead I’ve seen pulled out of the Trinity,” said Harrington. “We thought it was a big Chinook at first and were shocked when it went on a big run and showed it’s color.”

For his efforts, Tom is entered into our Hawg of the Month Contest and has a chance to win some Pautzke’s headgear and, maybe just maybe, a trip for two with guide Bill “Swanny” Swann of Swanny’s Fishing.

I admit it: I’m part of the problem. Every time I see a picture of a tuna I immediately start daydreaming of a big hunk of it pan-seared or, better yet, sashimi style with some wasabi and soy. But I digress…

Jason Sweetwoods had some banner fishing down off San Jose Del Cabo this week, catching at least two cow yellowfin tuna over 200 pounds! This dandy tipped the scales to 214 pounds and took over 45 minutes to land. In addition to a truckload of serious grub, Jason also earns entry into this month’s Hawg of the Month Contest in which he’ll have a shot at some Pautzke’s headgear and, if he advances to next month’s Hawg Bowl Playoffs, he will vie for a guided fishing trip for two with Bill Swanny Swann of Swanny’s Fishing.
