Roxy “Tuesday” Kessler caught this nice striped bass on the California Delta while tossing a white Herbert signature series swimbait.

You can vote for Roxy and other May entries at the end of the month. Monthly winners get a prize pack from Yakima Bait and also advance to the Hawg Bowl playoffs.

Your April Hawg of the Month!

Calling it a landslide victory would be an understatement…Chris Mayes’ chrome kayak-caught brown trout from Lake Almanor wiped the floor with the rest of the field in the April Hawg of the Month Contest!

I’m not at all surprised by Chris’ win, but I am blown away at the margin of victory. His fish is awesome but with such a wide and impressive array of competition, I just figured the vote would be tighter.

The public has spoken and, as this month’s winner, Chris will advance to the Hawg Bowl Playoffs this winter. He also will receive a nice pack of goodies from Yakima Bait.

April was a very interesting month for Hawgs, with several cool species going head to head. I’m looking forward to seeing who wins this round. Top Hawg, of course, gets a sweet prize pack from Yakima Bait, along with entry into the Hawg Bowl Playoffs!

Okay, let the games begin…

Fly-Caught Striper (April Hawg of the Month Contest entry)

Here’s a dandy 20-pound class striper that was caught & released by Jeremy Notch on the Sacramento River last week.

He was using a chartreuse & white Clouser Minnow on an 8-weight rod when the big spent hen bit.

“My Lamson Konic reel burst into pieces on one of the many powerful runs the fish made, and I resorted to stripping the fish in at the end of the fight,” Jeremy said.

Well, if he wins this month’s Hawg Contest, Jeremy won’t be getting his reel replaced but would gain entrance to the Hawg Bowl Playoffs…and a nice prize pack from Yakima Bait.

Drift Boat Sturgeon (April Hawg of the Month Contest entry)

Ross Ellis sent in this pic of his buddies Jake Mahon (left) and JJ Kinstrey holding JJ’s first-ever sturgeon.

The fish was was caught & released while the guys were fishing squid from a driftboat on the Willamette River.

Ross & JJ are both active Coast Guard and were up in the Pacific Northwest for some training and spent their off time catching a mess of sturgeon.

JJ’s fish is entered into our Hawg of the Month Contest and you’ll get a chance to vote for him at the end of April. If he happens to win, it will be interesting to see how the boys divvy up the Yakima Bait prize pack.

Hoh Hawg (April Hawg of the Month Contest entry)

Kevin Spiva caught and released this dandy steelhead on Washington’s Hoh River and is now the latest entry in our Hawg of the Month Contest.

You can vote for Kevin at the end of April. Monthly winners advance to the year-end playoffs and also receive a nice care package from Yakima Bait.

Crazy Topwater Blowup (April Hawg of the Month Contest entry)

Holy crazed topwater blowups, Batman! This jumbo cubera snapper came up from a reef 50 feet below the surface to savagely explode Michael Tucker’s popper in Costa Rica last week…talk about a heart stopper!

Mike said that the plug (see inset) was brand new before Big Red got ahold of it…

You can vote for Mike’s fish or your favorite Hawg at the end of April. As always, monthly winners get the super cool prize pack from Yakima Bait and also entrance into the 2013 Hawg Bowl Playoffs in December!

Chris’ Chrome Brown (April Hawg of the Month Contest entry)

You aren’t going to see a whole lot of brown trout that are more chrome than this one unless you go find some sea-runs.

Chris Mayes moved to Chester, CA awhile back and decided to get Lake Almanor’s browns dialed in from his kayak. Looks to me like he’s got something figured out!

He said this silvery specimen jumped like a steelhead when he hooked it and is the best fish of the winter/spring for him so far. After a quick pic, the Chis thoughtfully let the fish go…

You can vote for Chris at the end of April. Monthly winners are automatically entered into the Hawg Bowl Playoffs in December and also win a cool prize pack from Yakima Bait.
