Light Tackle Shark Fishing!

In the South, White Bass are extremely common — and popular sportfish. Here on the West Coast, however, they only exist in a couple lakes…Having never fished these exotics in their native lands, Reilly and I decided to see what all the hype was about, so we put the super secret, under-the-radar FishWithJD skiff in the water and went on a little fact-finding mission. Bottom line: while not huge, these little critters that look like mutant striper x crappie hybrids are a blast to catch…

Forget El Nino, drought, climate change, giant squid, water diversions, overfishing and bad forestry practices. The boys over at AnglersTube have discovered the real reason salmon populations in the West are crashing! Kidding of course…

Be sure to watch it all the way to the end of the clip for a happy ending!

The World’s Ugliest Fishing Hole

by JD on February 27, 2010

Okay, this is just straight-up weird…but oddly entertaining, too! Lombard of the Intertidal takes you on a “deep, deep, inner city fishing experience” that is more urban than even Mike Iaconelli can get you into on City Limits Fishing.

Road Trip: Oregon Coast Steelhead!

by JD on February 15, 2010

Just got back from a week-long roadie in Northwestern Oregon, where Big Fred, Riles and I met up with our boy Nick “The Sultan of Steelies” Amato, Editor of Salmon Trout Steelheader Magazine and all-around cool cat. We focused on some of the smaller, less traveled streams on the Oregon coast. Here’s what we found…

Lights Out Striper Fishing!

by JD on February 13, 2010

Okay, shameless self-promotion time! For those of you within driving distance of the Sacramento River, it’s time to start thinking about that spring striper trip! Here’s a little video from last year to get you juices flowing.

Fishing will be heating up in March and will last into May (at least)…don’t miss out! I just so happen to know a good fishing guide if you’re looking to go the guided route…

Sacramento Valley Stripers

by JD on February 4, 2010

JD with a big topwater striper from the Sacramento River

Finally, it’s time to go catch stripers in the Sacramento Valley!! As we speak, schools of bass are moving into the Sacramento, Feather and American rivers and they’ll hang around until at least June in some areas…but the peak is March-May.

We’re currently booking guided striper trips in the Valley and specialize in using light spinning and fly tackle to throw streamers, topwater poppers and swimbaits.

Depending on the river we fish, we’ll either work out of our super-shallow running jet sled or ultra stealthy drift boat. We can handle up to 4 anglers on the sled and a max of 2 on the drifter.

Of course, all your gear is provided…just show up with a fishing license and a lunch and be ready for some fun!

Over the next several weeks is typically when the fishery peaks. Last year, we had some amazing days — from 50 to 100 fish — and we’re hoping to see more of that kind of action in 2010!

For more information or to schedule a date, please call or click onto JD RICHEY SPORTFISHING (916) 388-1956.

Now, here’s some more inspiration…

Smith River Steelhead Fishing Video!

by JD on January 7, 2010

The epic, “dream season” that was the Smith River’s fall Chinook run seems to have rolled straight into what looks to be an awesome year of winter steelie fishing! The Team FishwithJD boys headed north earlier in the week with guides John Klar of John’s Guide Service and Mike Stratman of Redwood Coast Fishingto see firsthand how steelhead season on the Smith is shaping up. A selfless act of recon, with you, the reader in mind, you might say…
