Redding, CA: Angler’s Paradise!?

by JD on August 13, 2007

IMG_4020.JPG

Redding, California doesn’t usually come to mind in conversations about top-notch fishing destinations, but it should. Whether it’s the world-class rainbow trout fishery below the Sundial Bridge on the Sacramento River (seen here), the huge number of big Chinook salmon that come back to the river each fall, the varied and exciting salmon, trout, bass and panfish possibilities in huge Shasta Lake, California’s largest kokanee in nearby Whiskeytown Reservoir, the salmon and steelhead of the Trinity River or all the classic blue ribbon trout fishing within easy reach at places like Fall River, Baum Lake and Hat Creek, Redding’s got it all.

Check out the latest issue of Western Outdoors Magazine for the in-depth article I did on fishing the Redding area.

Before you quit your day job and give full-time guiding a go, you first need to get an inside glimpse of what the gig’s really all about. Hint: being able to catch fish on a daily basis is actually a very small part of the whole deal. To find out more, check out my article on guiding in the latest issue of Salmon Trout Steelheader Magazine .

Check out the June issue of Salmon Trout Steelheader for my latest photo essay, “Distant Waters.” Also in that issue is my monthly tips column…this time around it’s all about how to better understand your fish finder (they’re kinda like women, you know…mysterious and sometimes tough to read!).

If you’ve ever wanted to do a self-guided dream fishing trip to Alaska or Canada, look for my Angling Adventures column in the June issue of Western Outdoors Magazine.

Monsters in Lake Tahoe?

by JD on May 8, 2007

Tahoe Tessie.jpg

Are there monsters in Lake Tahoe? Well, the not-so-simple answer is yes and no. I get to the “bottom” of it in my article in the May issue of Western Outdoors Magazine. Check it out!

Also, if you’re into trout fishing, read my column in the May Salmon Trout Steelheader on spring river techniques…tips that may just get you a nice bonus steelhead while you’re at it!

The Kwikfish Hall of Fame

by JD on May 3, 2007

IMG_2949.JPG

Over the years, I’ve named some of my Kwikfish and kept track — via small notches on the plug — of how many kings each lure has accounted for in it’s career. I have a bunch of plugs with over 50 kills and have had a few get up over 90 before they met their untimely demise. Here’s the Ace, Joe Montana, who has 103 kings to his credit. Read the entire story in this month’s issue of Salmon Trout Steelheader Magazine.

F&H News Cover

Proving without a doubt that the outdoor media has extremely low standards when it comes to models, here’s my second cover shot in a month…

Actually, I was kinda disappointed. You see, I’ve been hoping for People Magazine’s Sexiest Man of the Year honors, but they’ve yet to call. I know, because I’ve been sitting by the phone 24-7 waiting…and waiting…and waiting. Hmmm, maybe they don’t have the right number.

Speaking of magazines, the cover of Forbes wouldn’t suck, either, but that’s probably not in the cards anytime soon. Of course, in my days of being a wanna-be pop star, I figured the Rolling Stone cover was a forgone conclusion but, alas, that didn’t pan out. Oh well, I’ve still got my old music video that I’ll post here at some point.

Anyway, thanks to the Fishing & Hunting News gang for running my ugly mug on the upcoming issue of California edition. Check it out for the latest scoop on steelheading and all things hunting and fishing in the Golden State. www.fishingandhuntingnews.com

The best lure of all time???

by JD on January 23, 2007

Dardevle.JPG

The following is an excerpt from an article I have in the current edition of Western Outdoors Magazine.

So, what’s the best lure of all time?

It’s an interesting question and one that’s guaranteed to stir the pot down at the local watering hole, plunking shack or boat ramp. Steelhead anglers might vote for the Spin-N-Glo, Hot Shot or the original Wiggle Wart, while salmon fans would likely go for a Kwikfish or Flatfish.

Bassers, on the other hand, would probably choose a worm of some type, perhaps a Senko, a spinnerbait or maybe a flippin’ jig. And so it goes – trout fishermen and panfish enthusiasts would have their own favorites, as would stripers chasers, tuna trollers and kokanee anglers and on and on.

www.amatobooks.com.

I’ve also got lots of cool stuff coming out in Western Outdoors Magazine over the next few issues — features plus my regular Dateline West Stuff and my new monthly Angling column. Check it out!
