Holy cow…get a load of this nearly 70-pound California halibut! Frank Rivera of Camarillo, CA landed this 67.3-pound beast on Friday, July 1 off Santa Rosa Island while fishing aboard the 60-foot Mirage out of Oxnard.
The massive flattie is nearly nine pounds bigger than the current IGFA All-Tackle World Record, which also was caught off Santa Rosa Island in 1999, and, pending the application process, Rivera’s fish will take the top slot soon.
By the way, the Mirage struck again on July 3, with another massive butt — a 59.1 pounder — which you can see HERE

Peter Peter Vican, with his 77-pound, 4 ouncer. Back in 2008, he caught a 76 pounder!! We're not worthy...we're not worthy!

So, to make the next BASS Master’s Classic a little more interesting, maybe they should make all the guys fish with hookless lures — then we’d see who really knows how to catch ‘em! This is a striper we caught a couple days ago that was hooked…er…make that “wedged” on a jigging spoon! And it actually happened twice that day. Go figure…

Want to be a better surf perch angler and have more fun doing it? If so, forget everything you know about the sport. Leave the 40-pound test and the 4-ounce pyramid sinkers at home and put that 14-foot telephone pole and giant coffee grinder you’ve been using on Craigslist once and for all.
We’re not chasing sailfish here, people…the biggest perch you’re going to find off West Coast beaches are going to be redtails, which rarely top 3 pounds…so why all the heavy gear? If you scale back your tackle you’re going to put more fish in the bucket — and have a way better time doing it! [click to continue…]

Okay, many of you have heard the stories of my near-miss in the music industry in the early 1990s. The short version is this: A buddy and I decided we wanted to become rock stars, but didn’t have the talent. So, instead we went for a gimmick and blended two kinds of music together…country & rap (otherwise known as “crap”) and, quite surprisingly, we damn near made it. An expensive video, three record contract offers from Nashville and a meeting with Fleetwood Mac’s producer followed and we were on our way. Somewhere along the line, however, the train got derailed and the Boom Cowboys fizzled out..and the Beatles were able to breathe a sigh of relief.
So, for all of you who’ve been asking all these years, here’s your shot to finally see the Boom Cowboys Cut It Up video. And yep, sad to say that’s me with the hot pink shirt and cow guitar…(hey, it was a loooong time ago, what can I say!).
And here’s another shot of the Boom Cowboyz working their magic in the studio. Apparently, pink was a common thread in my life back in the day…

Well, there you have it…if you really, really want to hear the whole story, maybe I’ll tell ya sometime out on the boat. Now, go ahead…the comments section is yours. Do your worst!

This mammoth, record-class king salmon was found dead on Oct. 30 in Battle Creek, a major tributary to Northern California’s Sacramento River by a crew of biologists surveying the creek for spawners.
“The length of this giant was 1290 mm (50.7 inches!) and I can’t remember the massive girth, but a weight calculator gave an estimate of 85 pounds!” says Matt Johnson, of the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission, who sent to photo in to be entered in our Smoker of the Year Contest. “Some lucky dog might have broken the state record had there been a season this year!”
