Yyou’ve heard of the holiday dish called Tur-Duc-Hen, right? You know, the one that is made of turkey stuffed with duck that’s stuffed with chicken? Well check out this 5-pound Salmo-Wakasagi caught recently by my good buddy Rob Bonner in the high Sierra. He caught the greedy brown on a jumbo nightcrawler and it was stuffed with…50…count ‘em…Japanese pond smelt (also known as “wakasagi”) in its gut! Goes to show that with winter just around the corner, these guys can’t pass up an easy meal!

I just returned from 2 days on the Trinity River. Yesterday morning, about 9am, I caught a healthy brown trout using roe I cured (my very first attempt to cure Pacific Salmon eggs- ANY roe as a matter of fact). I was thrilled to have hooked it right in front of a drift boat guide and two clients as they floated down past me at Trinity Canyon resort. I think it gave them the illusion that I knew what I was doing there perched on the rock beside a small hole! That was my second fish in an hour, the first a nice 10 pound wild salmon just turning amber-green in color. Friday morning from the same spot, I caught a shiny and colorful steelhead about 8 pounds on a rainbow trout colored Panther Martin spinner- a ten minute glorious fight. In all from Junction City down to Del Loma, I had 12 assorted fish for my trip; using roe, spinners, night crawlers and a tuna ball someone gave me at Monkey Creek…. not bad for someone trying to figure out how it’s all done. I suppose it helps having a plentiful river like the Trinity!
Sounds Like a good trip!
very nice fish, I once caught a 51/4# brown on the Trinity at Lewisten with a grey ghost steamer he had a 11 inch trout in his throat. I releast both fish intact.
This reminds me of the trout I caught about 3 years ago. It had a big belly and when I cut it open I found nearly an entire package worth of senkos. All of them different colors. I guess this fish just had a liking to the lost senkos from the bass fishermen on the lake. The funniest part about this is I later used one of those senkos to catch several smallmouth bass. Go figure!
Ha! That is funny!
Early Thanksgiving, Nice Catch Rob
