So, this morning…when Jr was supposed to be getting in the car to go to school and I was supposed to be rigging for my guide trip, we wandered out in the street to do a little impromptu casting lesson.
It was only a few minutes before mom came out and whisked him off to school but it’s moments like those that will forever stay with me…and also make me realize we need to do all we can to ensure there are some fish left for little man and his buddies when they’re our age!

What’s up on the American river any update on salmon?

We grew up in a blue collar family with not alot of funds in Wheaton, Minnesota. About seven miles from Wheaton was a river called the Mustinka (no kidding) and once a week we would get Mom and my brother with a can of worms and go catch a wonderful dinner of catfish and bullheads. I will treasure those moments forever, and now about once a month my 40+ year old daughter and her two boys and I repeat those memories near her ranch on the California Delta. I hope my Grandkids hold those moments as close as I do. Butch
Indeed! Thanks for the story!
I grew up hearing such incredible fishing stories at the dinner table from my Father, Grandfather and Father in law about our favorite coastal steelhead streams. These were stories that seemed like I dream I would have!!! Now I hope to just get a bite at times. To see the boy casting a fly rod in the front yard is awesome, it reminds me of growing up. He will turn out to be a good fisherman.
Just the thought of what the fisheries used to be like when I was growing up compared to now is a little disheartening. I used to fish a place called Barker Creek up near the Rubicon. We would catch and release up to 50 small brook trout a day. I recently went back to take my son. I even took him to the old honey hole. We caught only 5 fish. It is kinda scary what has happened. I am dedicated to the conservation for my son. Thanks for the photo. It made my Friday.
Cheers
Great picture, JD!
So true JD! I have a a little one on the way and she’ll have a fishin pole in her hand before I can blink an eye. I want her out-casting me for native steelies when I’m old and cantankerous! We must commit to preserving and maintaining fish habitat and with it the sport we love.
Thats’s the right idea, Jon!
