So, in case you’ve ever wondered what happens when you forget to trim up your kicker before you run a 3-inch deep riffle at 30 mph…here ya go!
Deep in the groggy depths of salmon seasons past, I’ve done this maybe once a year. Until yesterday, I’ve been lucky enough to never hit anything pulling this bone-head maneuver.
Well, my streak obviously came to an end…and so did the pristine condition of my prop. For the year and a half that I’ve owned that motor, it didn’t have so much of a scratch. Oh well, I guess if you run enough shallow rivers, you’re gonna break something eventually :(

I did the same thing Saturday but didn’t break any pieces off tho.
Done that on the left runway on the feather just above the vance launch. My drift boat had a long shaft 9.9 yamaha and I crunched it at the top of the runway. It was pretty bent up also. New prop was only $80 bucks. I bet yours is more. I kept that prop in case I ever went back to that same area. I figured I would use the messed up one on the really sketchy rivers. Never used it again.
Your hour meter is off by an hour, probably not on Daylight savings time
Ive done that!never hit bottom though.Didnt notice a little extra drag when getting on plane?
Marc, it was just a real quick pop up over a riffle with a short take off. So it was too late…
JD, only about $160 here. Sorry for your loss. http://www.mertenmarine.com/servlet/the-Mercury-Propeller–dsh–by-HP-cln-9.9hp-BigFoot-Pro-Kicker/Categories
I was at the low flow this morning…was that you?
I don’t see what the problem is JD. There’s still 3 good ones left.
I did that to a prop on the kenai and our top speed dropped to 4 mph and made for one long trip home long that nite
What’s the problem? The other 3 blades look pretty good to me!
ops! looks like $$$$$$$$$$$$$ that hole in the water , again!
you have my simpathy, been there, dunnit!
Several months ago I bent the prop on my outboard after striking a rock. I straightened the prop as best I could. Next trip out, I was able to go 1 MPH faster than I ever had before! Go figure….
At least it was just the prop, my friend. I hit something on Memorial Day, and after repairing and rebalancing the prop I learned that my prop shaft is bent. Anything above idle makes my boat shake like Katherine Hepburn. Totally awesome.
Umm….done a lot of really bad things, but 30 mph up 3″ with the kicker down?? I JUST remembered I did the same thing..at least the bottom wasn’t rocky and I lucked out! Oh yeah, just remembered, once I ripped the bottom of my intake off of my outboard jet just below charlies hole below the feather river outlet, good times! That was the last time I smoked weed. HA!
