Well, I admit, I kinda just needed an excuse to post this classic shot of Ava Gardner, the original “Woman in Waders from filmnoirphotos. Seems like the Hollywood hotties back in those days were a little more willing to get a little fish slime under their nails than they are today. But I digress…It’s time for another round of Ask JD. This one comes from Chris L, who’s looking to emerge from the dark ages :)
JD, I’ve had my current BARE neoprene waders for about 10 yeas now and I think its finally time to retire them. I was looking into getting some breathable waders but don’t know what brand to get. I’m sure you have gone through your fair share and wanted to see if there was a brand that you favor over others. I’m also a pretty big guy (6’7″ with a size 15 shoe) and might need to get some custom made so if you have any recommendations I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Seriously, you’ll love breathables…once you try ‘em, you’ll never go back. Say goodbye to SUS (Sweaty Undercarriage Syndrome)!! Anyway, I’ve pretty much tried them all and have had some pretty good luck with Cabela’s Guide models but they really only last me a season or two. A few years back, I took the plunge and spent the $$ and tried some Simms. Best waders I’ve ever had, bar none. Pricey yes, but they fit right and are super durable. I didn’t go for the super top end G4′s but instead went middle of the road and have been very happy.
Also, Simms will custom build them for you to your size. Give breathables a try…and welcome to the 21st Century!

Wow, Miss Ava looks happy and is so beautiful…. I just hope my makeup stays on so well..as I am heading up to Clearlake for the weekend to take a fly fishing mini course from my most beautiful 50 something year old Aunt Barbara, one of the great lady fisherwomen in my family. Looking forward to some cold ones= Margarita/s, or an Ice Tea if too early in day for a cocktail, I just can’t wait for some sunshine= the hotter the better for us girls,as the coast is socked in with fog again today, and from what I hear our from my friends up there in Lakeport= Lakeportians they have been
“Banging Them” during downtime from house remodeling, off their dock in Lakeport we are going to hopefully get all of my wishes…. and after a great days fishing we will go see all the fun and animals at the Lake County Fair, Parade on Sunday, and drop by the Cowboy Bar one night for some line dancing.. and of course do some wader shopping while I am there. Yee Haw.. looking forward to Labor Day Weekend in Lakeport.. Everyone have a good and safe weekend :)

Lol…thanks for the info JD…I just started really using my waders about two years ago and really the “SUS” is why I’m looking to upgrade.
