Happy Memorial Day everybody! Between hot dogs on the grill, leaps into the pool and a couple cold ones with friends and family in the back yard, let’s not forget to take a moment to think about the folks who’ve given their lives for this country.
We truly appreciate all your sacrifices! Thank you!!!!!!!!!

The Apple...and the Tree
Like his brother Ty, who won the
Hawg of the Month Contest a couple months back, Tim Mitchell is also a great stick when it comes to steelie fishing. Here he is posing with proud papa Jim, with a chrome Smith River steelhead he caught on roe and a puffball.

So, so sad...
So, this little bit of bridge graffiti has long been a favorite on mine. It comes to you from the Yuba River in Northern California, where we find that poor Benny got his heart broken by Wanda. Obviously, Benny’s not quite what you’d call a master of the English language…I believe he was trying to say “Too much to lose…Wanda from Benny” but hey, can we really blame the guy for a few grammatical errors when he’s just been kicked to the curb by a woman?
What does bother me here, however, is what a sap Benny’s being. I mean, come on, kid, get a hold of yourself…pick yourself off the mat and move on. I think Benny Boy could really change the whole meaning of this message and regain some self-respect with just a few simple pieces of punctuation: a comma and two o’s. Read on to see how…

Trolling for kokanee salmon on Montana’s Lake Koocanusa with an ultralight rod and 4-pound test, Jeff Gould hadn’t planned on nearly getting his ass handed to him…but that’s exactly what happened when this 10.6-pound bull trout came calling.
Gould said that the fish nearly spooled him and there was even some talk of backing the boat up and chasing it like a big blue marlin. Eventually, however, he was able to slip the net under the huge char. After a quick photo session, the fish was released…much to the dismay of the kokanee population of the lake! As the latest entry into our Hawg of the Month Contest, Jeff will have a chance to compete for a free fishing trip.

Think maybe I'll call in sick tomorrow!
If you weren’t already wasting enough time at work on the internet, here’s a great way cracker off a few more hours! The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates a
live fish cam in the fish ladder at Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River. The camera refreshes every few seconds and you can watch salmon, steelies and shad passing over the dam. Be careful…it gets addictive!
If nothing happens to be going by when you’re watching, check out this
video from the fall Chinook run.

What's next? Are you guys going to wear white after Labor Day too??
They’re wet. They’re cold. They’re bored. They’re colorful. Yep, it’s time for everybody’s favorite game:
Fill in the Blank!. Go ahead (in the comments section below) and take a guess as to what this guy is saying…

A 10-pound yellow on bass gear is like hooking the bumper of a garage truck!
In Baja, some anglers live for jumping stripers, casting iron into boiling yellowfin or stopping on floating debris and catching dorado until their arms get sore. Others get off on the sound of a reel screaming as a wahoo rips for the horizon. And then there’s adrenalin jolt you get when pez gallo charges your bait just beyond the surf.
All that stuff is cool — really cool – and I love it, but my absolute favorite thing to do down there is to mess around inshore with freshwater bass gear.
The shallow rocks, beaches and kelp lines on both sides of the peninsula harbor a mind-boggling array of finned critters of all shapes and sizes. Many of these species are too small or not good enough table fare to be targeted by other anglers, but who cares? They bite, burn line like crazy and pull a lot harder than anything you’ll find in a lake or river back home.

Central Valley Salmon Season...It's On! (sorta)
At long last, the California Fish & Game Commission today adopted the the regulations for salmon fishing on Central Valley rivers.
Bottom line: Yes, there will be king salmon fishing allowed on the American, Feather and Sacramento rivers…but it will be more limited than in the pre-crash days.
Here’s a look at the seasons…
