Grilled Soy & Sesame Striper

by JD on April 29, 2010

Spring is striper time out here on the West Coast (out East too!) and, in addition to being a really sporty fish to chase around with rod and reel, they’re damn tasty.

Striper flesh is firm and white — it’s a really a user-friendly fish that takes well to many cooking styles. While rolling striper chunks into beer batter and dropping them into a boiling cauldron of cholesterol is a my favorite way to cook it up, a much more artery-friendly approach is to grill it Asian style.

Scott “The Sporting Chef” Leysath, co-host of the popular cable show HuntFishCook shows us how…

Before you quite your day job and get a guide’s license, here’s a little behind the scenes look at the life & times of a fishing guide…

SKREEANT! SKREEANT! SKREEANT!

A series of horrific screeches pierce the silent evening. My heart rate’s suddenly gone from 0 to 100 mph in just under a nanosecond and I jolt upright, trying to figure out where the terrible sounds are coming from.

SKREEANT! SKREEANT! SKREEANT!

It takes me a bewildered moment or two before I realize that it’s my alarm clock. It’s hard to believe that this little white plastic contraption — no bigger than a Kleenex box — can produce such an atrocious noise. I pound on the snooze bar with a closed fist, hoping to smash it into oblivion and then I fall back to sleep. [click to continue…]

Wonder if this thing would fit in my driveway??
You know, with the economy still in the tank it’s a great time to find some really good deals on that next fishing boat. Take this little 185.5 footer for example. The ad I found posted on The Yacht Market says that the owner is very motivated and has decided to go with a “major price reduction.” You can swoop in and steal this baby for a song…a mere $5 Million.

Quite a deal when you consider this 1999 Sanuki features a cruising speed of 12 knots and a 900-mile range. It also can accommodate up to 300 passengers, 6 crew and 12 service staff. According to the website, “This unique yacht is ideal for dinner cruises, private parties, corporate events…” which means it can be a valuable tax write off too for the enterprising angler! The Geeks are en fuego!

The Fishing Geeks have struck again! This time, the dynamic fishing duo of identical twins Adam and Sean Konrad, teamed up for this IGFA all-tackle world record 25.2-pound burbot, that Sean hooked in Sascatchewan’s Lake Diefenbaker on March 27.

The jumbo “ling,” as they often called, ate a whole herring soaked on a medium spinning outfit. The catch is just another feather in the Geeks’ already impressive fishing resume. When it receives final approval, this will be the 10th IGFA certified world record for the Konrad boys — the most impressive of which was the all-tackle, 48-pound record rainbow trout from the same lake that Sean caught back in September of 2009.

For more details on the Konrads and their record fish, check out Northwest Wild Country.

Guys, a little advice for ya, if I may…If you’re one of those macho, know-it-all, super cool (read: insecure) kind of dudes, don’t ever take a woman fishing.

They’ll out-fish ya every single time. Personally, I think it’s super cool when the fairer sex flexes a little pescatorial muscle, but some dudes just can’t handle it. Luckily, Jim Mitchell isn’t one of those guys and is always stoked to see wife Christine hook up. Here she is with a nice colored up buck steelie from the Umpqua River in Oregon, which is our latest Hawg of the Month Contest entry. [click to continue…]

Name that Fish (Nickname Edition)

by JD on April 23, 2010

You’ve jumped all over my last few Name that Fish Contest entries like an 87 mph fastball right down the pipe, so in this round, I’m going to have to add a new little wrinkle.

This time, give me the common name of the fish above…plus I want at least one of the nicknames that are often used when referring to this guy. As usual, drop your answers in the comments section below…

Will there be salmon fishing this year on the Sacramento River??

Just a quick note on the status of salmon fishing for the 2010 season for the Sacramento, Feather and American rivers…the California Fish & Game Commission, which was supposed to make a decision at their meeting yesterday decided to punt until May.

I couldn’t get the exact reasoning when I called their office yesterday…but let’s just hope they postponed so they can take a look at all sides of the issue here. As always, we’ll report back when something new breaks in this story…
