Craig, cash & fishing...doesn't get any better than that!

So, this kinda sounds like a perfect day for a Bay Area sports fan: Go on a free fishing trip with former 49er running back Roger Craig (yes, he of three super bowl rings) and collect $1,000 in cold, hard cash.

All you have to do is fill out an entry form on World Fishing Network Bay Area and you’re entered. If you win, will you ask Rog if maybe he wouldn’t mind suiting up again this year…the Niners could use him!

And speaking of #33, you can also meet him in person at Hi’s Tackle Box in San Francisco on May 22.

What do salmon mean to you?

On April 1, a congressional panel led by Congressmen George Miller and Mike Thompson will assemble in San Francisco to hear from fishery leaders and the public about the economic and human costs of the closed 2008 and 2009 fishing seasons. This is the best opportunity in years for salmon fishermen and other supporters to join in a united statement that we support salmon, salmon fishing and the water and habitat needs that will allow the stocks to rebuild. Please attend and help make a statement. Show our leaders that salmon are important. [click to continue…]

The luckiest guy in the world

by JD on March 26, 2010

Okay, time to retire!

While digging through the Vault the other day, I found this old photo of my early guiding days on the American River. With me that fine January day was a fellow named Lloyd who was a first-time steelheader.

The tale of Lloyd and his first-ever steelie is one that I still often tell when I take a group through the same section of lower Rossmoor Bar.

This is Lloyd’s story… [click to continue…]

Start 'em young!

Ty Mitchell is all of 12 years old but is already quite the accomplished steelheader. He caught and released this native on the Smith River in Northern California on March 14 and, as proud papa says “the boy can fish.”

Ty’s now entered into our Hawg of the Month Contest. If you’ve got a big fish and want a chance to win a free fishing trip, click HERE

Salmon, like this one caught aboard the Wacky Jacky, will be the target April 3
Well, it’s official. Salmon anglers off the California coast will get their first crack at salt water Chinook in three seasons.

The season is set to open April 3, 2010 and will run at least until April 30. In mid-April, the Pacific Fishery Management Council and the California Fish and Game Commission will determine the ocean salmon sport seasons for the balance of the year and those will go into effect on or after May 1. So, basically, there’s a one-month season guaranteed and maybe more.

Thanks to two solid finishes in the first two BASS Elite Series events of 2010,the man in black (and yellow), Skeet Reese, has taken an early lead in the Toyota Tundra Angler of the Year competition.

After taking second place (and missing first by 1 ounce) at the Duel in the Delta March 14, and taking 5th at last weekend’s Golden State Shootout on Clear Lake, the 2009 Bassmaster Champion is off to a rip-roaring start. [click to continue…]
