Okay, so here’s a special (and slightly creepy) edition of our Name that Fish Contest in which you can actually win something. Yep, thanks to our friends at Northwest Wild Country Radio and Wiley X, we’ve got some bad-ass Wiley X sunglasses for whoever can properly I.D. all the critters from which these eyeballs were pried.
This one comes to ya from the “Well, it seemed like a good idea initially…but things got a little off track along the way” file:
On October 11, Gov. Schwarzenegger signed legislation that repealed the requirement for anglers to purchase a Bay-Delta Enhancement Stamp with their fishing licenses beginning Jan. 1, 2010. [click to continue…]
Okay, so because it’s the holidays, I’m gonna lob ya a big, fat batting practice fastball for this edition of our Name that Fish Contest. But, because this one is so easy, I’m going to have to hold off on any clues, except to say that I shot this photo at the Buskin River…so, if you have a clue where that is, you’ll have a leg up.

Okay, so if you’ve ever used a Sabiki rig to catch baitfish, you know A) Sabikis are deadly and B) It’s almost impossible to get one out of the package without it turning into a useless, tangled bird’s nest. So, I got a good chuckle the other day as I was struggling to remove a Sabiki rig from it’s packaging…and noticed this little informative tidbit printed on the back side…
Our pal T.K. had big kings on the brain while he was trolling a spinner in the Sacramento River in mid-November. Imagine his surprise when the big Chinook that smacked his lure turned out to be…a 26-pound striper! For his efforts, T.K. earns a spot in our November Hawg of the Month competition!

Budding young angling super stud, Jake Martinson of Washington State, was doing his best bass fishing impression on the Olympic Peninsula, crankin’ a wobbling plug around a wood pile when he caught this gorilla of a silver. The 20-pound slab earns him a shot at the November Hawg of the Month title and…perhaps a chance at Hawg of the Year.

Okay, so may it sounds a bit like a sappy chick flick: “Clear Lake in the Fall,” but there is some seriously epic fishing to be had on this Northern California lake in the late autumn.
Everything — trophy largemouth, scads of big catfish and dinner plate sized crappie — are all putting on the feed bag before winter kicks in and the action can be non-stop. Great fishing, nice scenery…and hardly another soul on the water. What’s not to like? [click to continue…]
Dry flies aren’t just for trout streams and bass ponds…check out the fun I had on salmon with dries in Alaska this fall! Yea, they’re all 3- to 6-pound humpies, but a blast none-the-less…YEEEEHAAAAWWW!!!
JD heads north to Alaska for some super fun topwater dry fly salmon action!
