Oct Hawgs

Okay, so we had some pretty solid Hawg of the Month Contest entries in October…and now it’s time to vote on your favorite. The Hawg with the most votes gets passed on to the playoffs and will vie for Hawg of the Year honors in December (winner gets a fishing trip!).

And now, your October Hawgs of the Month…

Surprise Striper
Capt. Greg was minding his own business, drifting a live sardine for halibut in Nor Cal’s Tomales Bay when this jumbo 37-pound striper interrupted his program…and got him an October Hawg of the Month entry.

If you’ve got a big fish photo, send it in and you’ll have a chance at winning a free guided fishing trip with the FishwithJD gang. DETAILS

Where’s Waldo?

Where is Waldo

So, where’s Waldo…er…Walter? Somewhere in this mass of spawning kokanee salmon is a big brown trout. Okay, eagle eyes, can you spot him?? I’ve got the answer posted HERE if you want to see if you got it right.

Lake Almanor Map with Hot Spots??

by JD on October 26, 2009

J.D.

I enjoy fishing Lake Almanor and reading the fish reports in W.O.N. Usually the articles say where they are catching fish. Example: the A-frame, El Dorado Inn, rec 1, rec 2, the springs. None of the maps I have of the lake show where these spots are. Do you know of a map that I can buy that will show where these spots are located on the lake? I would appreciate any help you can give me.

Larry P.

I’m not sure of a specific map, but the Lake Almanor Fishing Association can hook you up with all that info.

Oct. Smoker

As a young and impressionable lad, Chris Mayes always dreamed of fishing for black salmon in the famous tributaries of the Great Lakes. Often, he would lie awake at night, picturing himself, wedged into a lineup of 150 camo-clad guys standing shoulder to shoulder in a creek as wide as a bike path, sight casting to rotting kings on redds.

Sadly, Mayes never was able to make his dream trip to the upper Midwest…aka: Smokerville, the Holy Grail of Soretails…but he came close on Oct. 19. While not the famed streams of Ground Zero for Cheese Heads, he found bliss on Northern California’s Trinity River, where this Great Lakes style “chromer” actually latched onto a No. 4 Mepps Aglia spinner.

We’ll let Chris take us home on this one…

“Why was I smiling,” he asks. “Because when I landed the fish, I knew I had a contender for SMOKER OF THE YEAR!

Oh yes you do, Chris! And since we’ve opened this can of worms, it’s time for some tough love here, people. You guys are seriously slacking when it comes to sending in your Smoker of the Year entries! I know, I know…it’s been a lousy year for salmon fishing in a lot of spots. But get creative! I know there are some darkies being caught out there somewhere. Send ‘em in!! DETAILS

Big Fred's Day 1 Bass
Like he did the week before at Toledo Bend, our man Big Fred Contaoi wowed the crowd over the weekend at the Toyota Texas Bass Classic on Lake Conroe with a lunker largemouth. This 7.88 pounder was the big fish for the tourney on day one and helped Contaoi reach 7th place in the $250,000 event.

Unfortunately, conditions were tough on the second day for Fred and he slipped in standings, but still ended up with a very strong 22nd place finish. And keep in mind, this was against the best bass anglers in the world!

A great start...Fred's first bass of the tourney

A great start...Fred's first bass of the tourney

He of course would have liked to make the top 10, but when you’re fishing against what amount to an all star team of talent, 22nd is something to feel good about.

Here’s a look at the tourney…
