Name that Fish!

Okay, so here’s another round of Name that Fish! for all you budding fish heads out there. With this guy, I’m going to hold off on the clues other than there may just be a bit of trick photography involved here. No, the pic hasn’t been altered with PhotoShop, but let’s just say the camera angle may make this guy look a little different than normal…

Any guesses? If so, leave ‘em in the comments section below. Good luck!!

A Pink year in California??

by JD on September 27, 2009

California Pink Salmon

Curtis “Exotic Species” Wilson seems to have a habit of stumbling onto some rare fish in Northern California’s waters. This time, the man they call “Turkey” was prospecting for kings on the Mad River near Arcata, when this wayward pink “hit.” Pinks of course, are extremely rare south of Washington State and it’s the first one anybody can remember on the Mad.

If you recall, Wilson was also the proud angler who caught a sockeye in the Trinity River last year. See the pic HERE

Klamath Salmon Derby: A Huge Success!

by JD on September 24, 2009

Scenery

The American Fishing Foundation held its second annual charity Klamath River Fishing Derby Sept. 18-19 and the event was a huge success! The final numbers have yet to be crunched, but the event raised money for several good causes, including the Yearling Chinook program at Iron Gate Hatchery, the Chinook Marking program and upgrades to the Roy Rook launching facility on the lower river. Bob’s Ling (Hawg of the Month entry)

by JD on September 21, 2009

Bob's Big Ling

Here’s our latest Hawg of the Month Contest entry coming to us from Bob Gray, who hit the saltwater off Kodiak Island, AK earlier this month. Fishing was good, he says for coho, halibut and lings and he ended up with a patriotic freezer full red, white and blue fillets…here’s where the blue stuff came from, a big ol’ mouth with fins (aka lingcod).

Don’t forget to send us your big fish pix! Enter them into our Hawg of the Month Contest for a chance to win a free fishing trip with us!

Name that Fish: Mr. Fishwich

by JD on September 14, 2009

Name that Fish!
Okay, so I’m the latest finned critter in JD’s Name that Fish Contest, which he does on a semi-regular basis here. See if you can figure out who I am. But first, please allow me to introduce myself. I’m a man of wealth and taste…uh..sorry about that one. Got a little carried away there. What? is it against the law for a fish to like the Stones? So sue me!

Anyway, you’ve probably met me before but didn’t know it…perhaps in some sort of processed fishwich at a fast food joint. Or maybe in a fish taco or fish stick. Yep, I’m yummy, flaky and mild..so they say, anyway (I’ve never partaken in the forbidden ritual).

I’m not considered much of a gamefish here on the West Coast, though my cousin’s got some fans in Europe and Norway. I normally spend most of my time in deep water, though I can be caught near shore at times.

Who am I?? And “Fillet-O-Fish” isn’t an answer!

The Middle Klamath

by JD on September 12, 2009

Red Cap Gorge
While the Lower Klamath River is packed with people and jet boats in the fall, the middle section is typically very quiet…even when the fishing’s red hot. [click to continue…]
