Some love for the American

by JD on February 13, 2009

Okay, so she’s not the Dean or the Babine or the Klamath or the Rogue. And she won’t ever be compared with the Cowlitz or the Hoh or the Sandy or the Smith. But the good ol’ American River right in downtown Sacramento (100 miles inland) still pumps out some really nice steelhead. [click to continue…]

Big Fred has a day on Guntersville!

by JD on February 12, 2009

Our bass dude, Big Fred Contaoi had a strong showing on Day 1 of the Walmart FLW Tour’s first stop of the season at Lake Guntersvillle, AL Thursday. Big boy got onto a nice pattern he put together in practice and it payed off to the tune of 4 largemouth that weighed 17-pounds, 10 ounces.

The sack of fish was good enough to put him 39th place — well within striking distance of making the cut tomorrow. Of course, had he not lost two other big bass, he would be sitting even more pretty as he’s only 3 pounds out of the top 10. At FLW Tour events, remember, they cut down from 200 anglers to 10 after day two, so a good showing tomorrow is a must.

Contaoi’s co-angler from Day 1, Terry Chapman of Stanley, NC is currently in third place overall in the co-angler (“backseat”) division.

Will Friday the 13th be the day Big Fred takes a huge step forward in his career? Tune in tomorrow for an update!

They were…um…it was this big!

by JD on February 12, 2009

Not two casts into the day on the American River, side-drifting for steelhead, one of my clients (name withheld by request) hooked and landed this nice…er…hen near Rossmoor Bar.

Now, we’ve hooked some strange things on the American River over the years, but ladies undergarments may just take the cake.

After the photo session, a discussion regarding the regulations governing sport-caught lingerie ensued. While the DFG regs booklet had no entries on the subject, we opted to do the right thing — release the bra so that maybe another angler might someday also have the pleasure…

Dobyns Rods 702 SF

by JD on February 12, 2009

West Coast bass wizard Gary Dobyns has completely re-designed his entire Dobyns Rods lineup for 2009 and has a whole mess of technique-specific sticks to cover just about any bass fishing situation you’ll encounter. The Dobyns Rods’ new 702 SF spinning stick is a nice, lightweight and modestly priced entry aimed at finesse plastics aficionados. But how does it fish?

How Skeet Reese rolls…

by JD on February 10, 2009

Professional bass angler Skeet Reese’s tow vehicle is about as subtle as a a slap across the face with a wet spatula on a cold February night…There’s no missing this behemoth Ford F650 when it thunders through your neighborhood en route to the next tourney.

So, all you aspiring tournament bass pros out there, do you want a rig like this?

Where can I fish??

by JD on February 9, 2009

There’s a lot of confusion surrounding trespassing rights along rivers. I mean, I’ve always heard that if a stream is navigable, then you could legally hike the banks up to the high water mark. But then I’ve also been told that that only applies in some states. And then there’s that whole nebulous “navigable” definition…

So, what gives??
