Oceans apart, but not so different…

by JD on January 19, 2009

In case you haven’t noticed, West Coast salmon and steelhead stocks are teetering on the brink and we need to get involved now before it’s too late. Let’s learn a little something from the plight of the Atlantic salmon in Europe and pledge not to let it happen here.

Consider this quick, but very poignant message from our European correspondent, Netherlands fish biologist, Franklin Moquette…

Hi Carrie, I’m the guy who never reads the instructions, so I could probably just send you mine…except I think I threw it away with the box!

Anyway, I found this online… MANUAL …scroll about halfway down the page for the link.

Take me to your leader, Earthling!

by JD on January 16, 2009

Visitors from another world? Nah…actually just some locals. You see, here in Nor Cal, we’ve got some bizarre, very alien-like critters swimming around in our waters including the sturgeon (above) and then you have the extra creepy looking bat ray…YIKES!!!

Don't forget to floss!

ODC Sport Pontoon Boat

by JD on January 14, 2009

Okay, so they say you shouldn’t take a knife to a gunfight, but I guess I’m just a bit hard-headed that way. I figured the best way to fully test out the 8-foot ODC Sport pontoon boat by The Creek Company was to run it down a wild, remote river for 3 days.

Swimbait Colors for Stripers

by JD on January 13, 2009

So, what’s the best color for a swimbait for striper fishing? Well, here’s our no-frills, super-easy to follow, at a glance guide!

Keep ‘er simple, that’s what I say! In general, go more subtle in clear water/sunny conditions and brighten everything up on dark days or in murky water.

At last…some good samon news!

by JD on January 11, 2009

It’s been a while since we’ve had any positive news on the salmon front, but a study recently released by Oregon State University may point to better times ahead.

Salmonzilla by a Landslide!

by JD on January 11, 2009

In runaway fashion, Salmonzilla has been voted by you the people as the 2008 Smoker of the Year Champion! It wasn’t even close…Salmonzilla received 70.4 percent of the vote, easily kicking his two rivals (who each earned 14.8 percent of the vote) to the curb.

Thanks to Department of Fish & Game biologist Doug Killam for actually picking this big guy up for a photo and also to biologist Matt Johnson, who originally broke the story to us.

We’ll be announcing the details of our 2009 Smoker of the Year Contest in the upcoming weeks, so keep taking pictures of those dark nasty fish you’re catching out there. You know the ones…

Until then, let’s give a big round of applause to our 2008 Smoker of the Year Champ!

Fish passage, European Style

by JD on January 10, 2009

You all know I’m really into river restoration, so I thought you might enjoy seeing these shots of a newly-constructed fish ladder on the Saybach River in Rhineland-Pfalz, Germany. The Saybach is tributary to the Rhine River and before the rock weirs were put in place, there was a 7-foot waterfall that blocked the upstream migration of salmon and brown trout. Sweet restoration work and some pretty dam cool looking countryside too, eh?

Our friend and European correspondent Franklin Moquette, who’s a biologist in the Netherlands sent in these photos…
