Time to Vote!

by JD on December 30, 2008

Okay kiddies, it’s that time of year again…Time to Vote for your favorite Smoker of the Year! I’m not sure if it was the salmon closures on the West Coast this year or what, but it’s been a pretty lackluster Smoker season (former champ, Harrison Ibach didn’t even get in the game!). I’ll expect you guys to do better in 2009…and we may just have some legit prizes next season, too!

The Polls are Open!

So, here’s a list of this year’s entries…scross down through them all and click the “Leave a comment” button to vote. And now, here are your 2008 Smoker of the Year Contest entries…

#1: The Rare Golden Salmon

Yuri Beighsnagger and his pal ZeeZeetopski sent in this photo of a rare and seldom-seen species of salmon (aren’t they all these days??) that they caught a while back on the River De Plume, near their homeland of Palermosa.

#2: The Prince of Darkness

Jerry Lampkin of TNG Motorsports Guide Service seems to have a real way with big, salty bucks (some would say it takes one to know one!).

#3: European Big-Scaled Salmon

Regular FishwithJD reader, Kenton Nichols of Eagle River Alaska, sent in this photo of himself from a recent trip to visit family in Pennsylvania where he and the gang did a little fishing for “European Big-Scaled Salmon” on the “Kenai of the Northeast,” the Juanita River.

#4: The Unknown Basser

The UniBasser sent in this photo of himself...With no salmon the year, what is a guy to do??

#5: Salmon Jerky

Mr. Iluv Cheeseheads sent in this chrome beauty of a king. Mr. Cheeseheads said that the fish fought, well, kinda like an old gym sock but...being a huge fan of salmon jerky, he was really excited about the fact that the fish was ready to eat as soon as he got it ashore. The fish bit an egg pattern Mr. Cheeseheads calls the "Skunge Scraper," which he says is murder on kelts, sore tails and cheese heads.

#6: Salmonzilla

DFG biologist Doug Killam with Salmonzilla, from Battle Creek (a trib to the Sacramento River). Estimated at 85 pounds when he was found, the beast may have been in the mid 90's in the ocean!

Salmonzilla is like the Smoker of the Century. He’s got my vote. Followed by the golden salmon and the big scaled Euro smoker.

Salmonzilla is the King Kong of smokers. Although it wasn’t hooked, fought, and caught, it was found. If the beast had an eyeball I would believe that it was still alive.
To find such a giant that could be a potential record in such great smoking shape is awesome. If I were one of those lucky biologists that found the beast I would have put it on my wall.

While I do like the golden salmon, I’m going to have to go with #6 salmonzilla.
