JD’s Near-Miss with Rock Stardom!

by JD on December 19, 2008

Okay, many of you have heard the stories of my near-miss in the music industry in the early 1990s. The short version is this: A buddy and I decided we wanted to become rock stars, but didn’t have the talent. So, instead we went for a gimmick and blended two kinds of music together…country & rap (otherwise known as “crap”) and, quite surprisingly, we damn near made it. An expensive video, three record contract offers from Nashville and a meeting with Fleetwood Mac’s producer followed and we were on our way. Somewhere along the line, however, the train got derailed and the Boom Cowboys fizzled out..and the Beatles were able to breathe a sigh of relief.

So, for all of you who’ve been asking all these years, here’s your shot to finally see the Boom Cowboys Cut It Up video. And yep, sad to say that’s me with the hot pink shirt and cow guitar…(hey, it was a loooong time ago, what can I say!).

And here’s another shot of the Boom Cowboyz working their magic in the studio. Apparently, pink was a common thread in my life back in the day…

Well, there you have it…if you really, really want to hear the whole story, maybe I’ll tell ya sometime out on the boat. Now, go ahead…the comments section is yours. Do your worst!

JD That video was the bomb, not sure why you guys didn’t end up on MTV?
By the way was that a blue Surf Ware jacket I saw in the video?
I had one of those back in the early ninties.
What can I say, I grew up in South Sac and graduated in 83 so you know that video hit home for me back in the hood.
Great job!

WOW. I mean, WOW.
“Yo, saddle up!”
I did enjoy the slow-mo jump with the guitar though.
Please DON’T make me watch it again.

Wow! Does that bring back memories! Maybe I’ll break out the New Year’s Eve Choad home video circa 1991(?).

Absolutely amazing! That was the very last thing that I expected after hearing this rumor through the grapevine. I agree with my wife, you didn’t lie about the chicks. Laughed so hard I drooled.

It was a blessing in disguise that your buddy got stage fright. You’re a good fisherman, stick with that.

It is amazing all the layers that make up the onion that is JD. The music industry’s loss is the sport fishing world’s gain for sure. Deena and I were speachless. Ryan Sabalow nailed it – this video is your ticket to obdeient offspring until they leave the roost!

Until the reunion tour…

Ok, You should take that down and dont ever tell anyone you did that… Naaa, just kidding, that was pretty funny! Very Vanilla Iceish… I’d say you’ve done better fishing… yes?

See ya on the water…

As soon as your boy turns about 12, show him this.

Do so with utmost seriousness and a grave countenance on your face.

Then tell him that if he doesn’t do what you say, you promise to break this video out every time he has a birthday party, brings a date home or has to speak in front of a large group of his peers.

I promise, you’ll have the best-behaved kid in NorCal.

So Madman, are you saying that you shoulda been the “Third Boom Cowboy?” Isn’t that kinda like…uh…the fifth Beatle? Of course, when the Has Beens and Never Weres Tour kicks off and we are playing with the likes of Glass Tiger, C&C Music Factory, Snow, Shaggy and Vanilla Ice, we may need a drummer!

To be a BC, however, you’ll need a new name…I am thinking Jimmy Rawhide…that sounds good with Joe Dakota and Jessie Jam…

Nice whammy bar work. I’m pretty sure I can do a better job with the drums though, JD.
