They tell me we’re nearly two-thirds of the way through September already yet my internal calendar is reading “June.”
I guess that’s what happens when there’s no salmon fishing in the Sacramento Valley for the first time in my life. It’s a really starnge sensation to not be out chasing kings every day…depressing, really. So, just for old times sake, I thought I’d throw up a photo of ol pal, Rob Bonner, with a chrome king he caught with me in the Sac a few seasons back. Although I’m not sure if that’s making me feel better or worse… [click to continue…]
Hey pal, do you mind? We’re trying to reproduce here! Okay, so it was kinda rude to stick my camera into these koke’s bedroom, but the shot came out pretty cool. These kokanee salmon were spawning in California’s Taylor Creek, which is a trib to Lake Tahoe. With the koke spawn just about ready to get underway, you owe it to yourself to stop by the creek if you happen to be near South Lake Tahoe this fall. [click to continue…]
A crisp, greasy-smooth morning. A topwater plug chug-chug-chugin’ across the surface. Geese cackling overhead and a big striper somewhere down below hears the breakfast bell ringing. Soon, the calm will be shattered and the popper will disappear in a violent explosion of spray.
Ah, yes, I love those fall mornings on the Delta. I can’t wait!
A new world record largemouth bass? You make the call! Watch as Wild Bill Skinner mixes it up with an El Salto Lake (Mexico) monster largemouth that eventually gets away. [click to continue…]
As he did last year, our fav bass pro, Big Fred Contaoi,is finishing his sophomore season on the Wal-Mart FLW Tour on a positive note — despite the best efforts of the weather.
Last year, it was at Clear Lake, his last event of the season, where he finished a solid 15th. This week, Fred was on Lake Champlain in Plattsburg, NY, where his 39-pound, 5-ounce sack of bass was good enough for… [click to continue…]
I’ve been totally excited about learning to fly fish for steelies on the Yuba River by my house in Marysville, CA.
My question is: How do i tie a fly to the line on my reel?? I know, dumb newbie question, but i have nobody else to ask. And seeing how youre the fishing god that helped me nail my first salmon last year(30#) ever, thought you might help me out.
Maybe even some tips on how and where on the yuba. Thanks, Minh
Hey Minh, fishing god, eh? I think you meant to say “dirty dog,” but whatever! Anyway, glad you got a big king last year…you were one of the lucky few!
As far as your main question goes, I assume you’re asking how to tie a leader to a fly line, right? If so, the best way is to get out there and buy a Nail Knot tool at your local tackle shop…Johnson’s in Yuba City probably has ‘em.
Scroll down for a couple videos on how to do it…
As far as where to go, i’d get up above the Highway 20 Bridge in October and fish a Glo Bug under an indicator near any spawning salmon — the steelies will sit right behind them.
There’s nothing like a little blatant disrespect of a fragile fishery to make your day! Be prepared to have your blood boil when you watch the video of these losers “fishing” the American River in Northern California where salmon fishing is currently closed for the year due to record-low returns.
