Name that Fish!.jpg
Judging by how quickly you guys have been guessing these things lately, this round of the Name that Fish Contest is going to be a little tougher. No big fat beach balls up on a tee for you this time! So, no hints this time, no nothing. So, what is this guy??

XTOOLS 6″ HybridX Pliers

by JD on June 12, 2008

Are XTOOLS’ 6-inch HybridX floating pliers a brilliant design or simply a gimmick? Read on to see how they fared in the real world…XTools HybridX Pliers

General Overview

Pliers that are light as a feather, float and resistant to rust…sounds like a great idea. Early models, however, had their flaws but the HybridX version is a different animal entirely.

Big Scaled Salmon.jpg
Regular FishwithJD reader, Kenton Nichols of Eagle River Alaska, sent in this photo of himself from a recent trip to visit family in Pennsylvania where he and the gang did a little fishing for “European Big-Scaled Salmon” on the “Kenai of the Northeast,” the Juanita River.

This beautiful Smoker of the Year Contest entry was taken on a dog turd marinated in donkey’s blood.

Wade Hayes’ big smallie

wade hayes and bass.jpg
Apparently, Wade Hayes can do more than play guitar and sing…turns out the country star is also quite handy with a rod and reel, thank you.

Here’s a sweet smallmouth bass he caught while fishing Nashville’s Percy Priest Lake with our pal and pro basser, Big Fred Contaoi who fishes the FLW Tour for Orange County Choppers.

And as far as Big Fred switching gears and doing a little pickin’ on the 6-string…well…it’s not pretty (trust me).

Though we’re still a ways off from publication, here’s a quick glimpse of my upcoming book on steelhead.

Unlike the last offering, which was a how-to, this baby’s going to be a photo-essay, coffee table type deal, in which I’m going to try to convey to people what steelhead fishing’s all about & why we do it. Here are a few pix to kinda give a the feel for the project :

Underwater king Salmon.jpg
Here’s a kinda cool shot I took while chasing kings on Lake Shasta…

The fish were all 2-3 pounds, nice & fat and pretty scrappy on light gear. We mooched ‘em up on anchovy chunks 117 feet down.
