Sacramento River King Salmon

After suffering through the worst king salmon season we’ve seen since 1992 in the Sacramento Valley, biologists say to expect a slightly improved run this coming summer and fall.

The scary thing is, the Big Picture doesn’t look good. According to fishery scientists, global warming is causing a severe shift in ocean conditions….which spells doom for our coldwater fisheries in the not-so-distant future.

Sadly, scenes like the one in the photo above from the fall of 2005 could be in short supply soon. Read the entire story in the Sacramento Bee.

Okay, here’s another strong Smoker of the Year contest entry.

This one comes from Jerry Lampkin of T.N.G. Motorsports Guide Service in Northern California.

In Jerry’s own words:

“The story is, it was my wife’s first salmon, so we had to keep it,” he says. “That’s my story and I’m sticking with it….”

Jerry didn’t mention where the fish was caught — probably didn’t want to reveal his secret Smoker Hole.

We understand.

Thanks for the photo, Jerry and keep up the good work!
