Name that fish!

Okay, kids, it’s time for another round of (insert cheesy game show music here) Name that Fish!

This bad boy has a mouth full of nasty, needle-point teeth and kinda looks like the vermin offspring of a trout crossed with a lingcod. They’d be super creepy but they only get to about 1 foot in length.

Here’s a quick hint: it lives in the warm near-shore waters of Hawaii and the locals call ‘em ‘Ulae.

Night Ranger!

Tim R. submitted this shot of himself and a Feather River king salmon for our Smoker of the Year Contest and man, I’ve got to say that we may just have a new leader!

By posting this, we of course assume Tim was fishing during legal fishing hours with legal fishing methods as outlined by the the Department of Fish & Game though we suspect otherwise.

Calamari anyone??

Mono Squid!

Bust out the beer batter! Auckland University of Technology professor, Steve O’Shea says that this Colossal Squid (43 feet long and an estimated 990 pounds) would yield calamari rings the size of tractor tires. The beast was caught recently in Antarctica’s Ross Sea.

I just got a serious dose of “Small Motor Complex” when I saw this the other day: Yamaha has introduced an outboard the size of Delaware to it’s lineup…a massive, 350 HP four-stroke.

This beast is a 5.3-liter V8 and weighs a “mere” 804 pounds. According to Yamaha execs, it should be a good choice for boats all the way up to 40 feet in length….though I’m guessing the bass guys are already trying to figure out how to reinforce their transoms to fit it.

For all you wrenchers out there, the big boy’s design features a 60-degree V8 with 32 valves (four valves per cylinder) and double overhead cams. It uses variable camshaft timing to optimize the engine’s torque at low and mid-range rpm. With sequential, multi-point fuel injection, it has eight long intake tracks in the induction system to optimize power. In addition, it features In-Bank Exhaust with Dual Power Surge Chambers, a system that relieves pressure in the exhaust ports.

Translation: Big motor go faaaaasssssssssssst!

Yet another “Smoker of the Year” contest entry. All we can say about this one is…the fish isn’t the only smoker here…(duh!). For more info on the contest, check out the category of the same name on the left side of the homepage.

On day two of the FLW Wal-Mart Pro Tour stop at Texas’ Lake Travis, Our man Big Fred Contaoi had a tough second day. Though his first day’s bag looked promising, he couldn’t pull enough fish together to make the cut.

So, it’s now on to the next tourney, which will be held in Tellico Lakes in Knoxville, TN, beginning March 29. As always, we’ll keep ya posted on Big Fred’s travels…

Aiming for the bright light above, the little guy — we’ll call him “Dan” — struggled through the pile of gravel where his mother had buried him several weeks before.

As he reached the top of the stones, Dan poked his tiny little head into the light, and without warning, he was rudely greeted by a swift current.

Big Fred's Big Bass.jpg

Just a quick update:

After Day 1 at the FLW Wal-Mart tour stop at Lake Travis on Thursday, our man, Big Fred, weighed in 5 fish for 7 pounds, 10 ounces, which put him within striking distance of the leaders (66th place out of 200 pros).

He worked out a nice pattern late in the day and felt like Friday could go really well.

Stay tuned!
